This NOVA program was amazing to watch, but if you missed it, you can still learn all about string theory, quantum physics and the theory of everything. In our family, we are half way through the two hours, because we all have to be together to watch it. My 6-year-old is completely amazed by theoretical physics. Go figure.

The Globe and Mail, a Canadian newspaper, has a great article on what public libraries should be focusing on.
The questions posed in the article are ones that every librarian doing programming or collection development should be asking themselves. Does this purchase or program represent a viewpoint disenfranchised by the media? Does it serve our local community or somehow play into the hands of big business? Does it give back a voice to those who are seldom heard?
Now of course we want books to circulate and our programs to be attended, but I agree that some libraries are looking far afield for programs and purchasing only books that are receiving major media attention. There has to be a balance between purchasing only bestsellers and purchasing only books that will moulder on shelves. But let's dance that balance and get it done. That dance is what makes library science fascinating and makes our jobs worth doing.

The Register has this article about Google getting rid of its famed PageRank system due to the TrackBack feature in blogs. Trackback is a way to create a list of blogs that refer to your original blog entry. It is a very slick way to show blogging community. But it creates a blank page. Google's PageRank sees those blank pages as legitimate sites that get a large amount of hits and so they show up as very high ranking pages. In some searches, seven out of the top ten sites listed were empty TrackBack pages! So Google has pulled PageRank and put in some big filters to see if they can put a stop to this situation.

Premiering today, this is an open access journal of biology from the Public Library of Science.
For what it's worth, public libraries are once again ranked. I am one of the detractors of this list, since it seems to favor libraries that have high circ combined with low cost. The only Wisconsin library on the list this year is Brown Deer Public Library.
LISNews -- Borders and the public library
A great article about how Borders is supporting the Hawaii State Library by helping with fund raising.
"At a time when bookstores find that the need to make a profit impels them toward shorter lists of titles, some book marketers believe public libraries soften the blow of potential customer inconvenience by stocking titles that bookstores can no longer afford to carry."
Very true! As well as offering out of print titles for people.

VeriSign calls halt to .com detours
CNet reports that ICANN, the nonprofit responsible for administering Internet addresses, has asked VeriSign, a domain registrar to cease using its SiteFinder service. The service takes misspelled and unassigned addresses and routes them to a Verisign owned site, rather than displaying an error message.
In the last few weeks, I have managed to run into this several times. It was very confusing because at first glance it seemed as if the site had been changed, not that I had made a typo.
