From Library Link of the Day comes an article that is definitely worth reading.
Rich Lowry: The ideological librarians focuses on the leftist leanings of the library profession. Though he despairs of ALA and the belief in civil liberties that libraries stand for, he only managed to remind me of exactly why I was drawn to be a librarian. He does say that libraries have "always been the bulwarks of civilization." Yes, and we still are. Which is probably why librarians realize more than many others why the abridgment of civil liberties is something to be alarmed about.

Government Says It Has Yet to Use New Power to Check Library Records
The article gives both sides of this debate. Obviously, I feel that the law should be done away with, because of the problem of abuse. I also would think that if it were necessary it would have been used in the months following 9-11, if at all.
In a Reversal, Ashcroft Lifts Secrecy of Data
Officials will make public data showing how often agents have examined library records and other material in their investigations.
Carla Hayden, president of ALA and several lawmakers said "the decision appeared to be a response to criticism that Mr. Ashcroft received this week after suggesting in a speech that the library association and other critics had helped fuel "hysteria" and misunderstandings over the government's use of the Patriot Act in libraries."

Yesterday, commons-blog posted about the essence of librarianship. They see the essence of librarianship to be "the idea that librarians have a fundamental social and professional responsibility to protect the rights of their users (and potential users) to open access to the information they need."
Hallelujah! Exactly! When I started library school, I really didn't understand this aspect of libraries. When I discovered that librarians fight for people's rights, I was hooked and knew that I had found my place to be.
But I also know that there are librarians out there who don't really believe in this. I had a boss once who turned completely pale when I insisted that I would rather lose my position than see a book censored at that library. In fact, I had verbally sparred with the previous person in her position and got a book returned to the shelves after he pulled it. Sometimes you even have to fight people within the profession for these ideals.
