Plastic: America Pops Its Cherry: Preparing For A Severe Terror Alert

This is from one of the non-library blogs I read. But this one has implications to libraries. I hadn't been aware that if the nation declares a Code Red Terror Alert Level that government and public buildings could be called on to shut down. Definitely something to keep an eye on.

Virtual Reference Service and Disservice

Ouch, criticism can hurt when it is aimed directly at something that you yourself have put a lot of time into. This article speaks to collections of links done by librarians. My list is guilty of not doing critical blurbs on the links, but I wonder how many of my general patrons want to wade through blurbs like that. Hmmm. Perhaps having a way for patrons to click to receive the critical blurbs. Looks like this article gave me a lot to think about.

Why Docs Don't Wear White Coats Or Polo Shirts at the Mayo Clinic

The amazing attention to detail that the Mayo Clinic uses to better service customers can be seen as an example that libraries can take to examine their own practices towards customers. I know that I am often so busy just keeping the day-to-day duties of the library done that I don't take the time to think about visual cues that we are giving our patrons.

MediaSavvy: CIPA

| | Comments (0)

MediaSavvy: The Children's Internet Protection Act

A very nice take on CIPA going before the Supreme Court today. I especially like the way that the inconsistency in the Bush appeal is pointed out. The appeal states that without CIPA libraries will be forced to provide access to pornography and that instead librarians should have the right to exercise judgment. Actually, the reverse is true and libraries can exercise judgment now, but will be unable to make local decisions if CIPA is allowed to move forward.
