Books vs Computers
January 30th, 2003
The San Francisco Examiner has this article about the renovation of San Francisco libraries and decisions to have more floor space for computers and less for book stacks. It is wonderful to see people in the community pushing for room for more books! But as in any library everything is a balancing act, and I don’t believe that any librarian is seeing this as a technology vs. books decision. As someone who has increased the number of computers without losing book space, I am grateful for not having to make this type of decision.

Computers are faster, easier, and more fun than books. Its hard to find a fact in a book while with a computerall you need to do is type in what you want to find and it pops right up.I think everybody should use computers instead of buying books. Why should wecut down more and more of the few trees we have when we can just go on the internet and find the same thing.I think its bull that most of the people that would like to read a book than use a computer, more than likely dont even know how to use one. I would much rather use a computer than read a book anyday.

I agree I think computers are probably the best thing that man kind has ever invented. It helps children learn with games, and it will advance even further than it is now. More technology will result in more jobs and more learning capabilities

I agree with nejla about the convenience of computers and the preservation of resources as a result of their use, however what Faye says about online saftey hazards are also great problems, not to mention the potential infringement risks from having the text of a book on the computer. I would LIKE to use a computer, much more so than a book, but if there were to be any completely Online Libraries developed, their merchandise would need to be protected such that no one could steal the knowledge inside the books. Also, if people were to be able to utilize the absence of books, they would need a computer, and not everyone has one in the first place. With an expansion of computers and technology and increased protection for digitalized merchandise, I believe the future of computer use has increasingly large potential.

I think books are better than computers because on computers you waste electricity from your house, but books barley use any electricity.
